RECOMMENDED BOOKS FOR JANUARY
“INTERVENTION – the series” begins January 9.
While we will not tackle the kinds of heavy topics on the A&E TV
show, we will talk about how to make true, lasting, and meaningful change in
our lives. Some people tell me that they
like to read the books I read. So, for
this series here are some books that might be of interest.
Leadership and Self-Deception, by The Arbinger Institute. This
book focuses on how self-deception is the root of most of our personal problems
and conflicts. Self-deception is
basically the problem of not knowing one has a problem. The book explores how to solve self-deception
in oneself. The arena discussed is
primarily a work environment, but is applicable to anyone.
Hunger for Healing by Keith Miller.
I first became acquainted with this book many years ago while leading a
Bible study. It was recommended by one
of the members and it was a very helpful resource. Keith Miller was a very well known pastor,
author, and speaker but made some bad decisions and his life tumbled. He turned things around by looking at the
twelve step approach of Alcoholics Anonymous as if it were a guide for anyone
trying to live a Christian life. This
book is the result of his efforts. (A
workbook is available also.)
It would be a good time to
re-visit Margin: Restoring … Reserves
to Overloaded Lives by Richard Swenson.
Some of you will remember Dr. Swenson leading a weekend workshop here a
couple of years ago. There is also a
companion Restoring Margin to Overloaded
Lives Workbook.
All these books will engage
your imagination while teaching important principles. I highly recommend these books – whether you
hear my Sunday messages or not!
