Enjoy the Convenience of Electronic Giving…A Greener Approach to Giving!

Electronic giving offers convenience for individual congregation members and provides much-needed donation consistency for our congregation.

A less frequently discussed benefit of electronic giving is its positive impact on the environment. An enormous amount of natural resources are consumed in the production, transportation, processing and disposal of paper checks. That’s why paying bills electronically always ranks high on any list of actions an individual can take to improve the environment. The trend toward electronic payments has already produced more than a 50% decline in check use since the year 2000!

Direct Debit Giving: automatically transfer funds from your checking or savings account to the church’s bank account.
Debit Card Giving: make offerings automatically on a pre-determined schedule using a debit card. Note: There is a processing fee charged to the church for this transaction.
Online Giving: Click here to set up an automatic donation plan, change your donation plan, make a one-time donation or view your online donation history.

NEW! EXTENDED IRA CHARITABLE ROLLOVER PROVISION

Tax legislation approved by Congress and recently signed into law by the President extends the IRA Charitable Rollover provision that expired at the end of 2009. The bill restores the IRA Charitable Rollover for 2010 and permits its use in all of 2011. The act is retroactive to January 1, 2010, so donors who previously made 2010 IRA rollovers will qualify. This means that older members of congregations may make direct transfers from an IRA to a local church, to one of our United Methodist institutions, or to other qualified public charities from now until the end of 2011 without encountering tax liability for the gift portion of the distribution from the IRA.

The IRA owner must be 70½ or older, and the transfer can be no more than $100,000 each year. The rollover gift must be either an outright gift or for a specific purpose, but it may not be to a donor advised fund, charitable gift annuity, or supporting organization. The transfer is made directly from a trustee to the church or organization. Because Congress recognized that it is very late in the year, individuals who choose to make a qualified charitable distribution rollover from their IRA trustee to their church or charity may make their 2010 charitable gift during 2010 or in January of 2011.

For a sample authorization letter requesting such a rollover from an IRA, contact the New Mexico Conference Methodist Foundation at 505/255-8786 or 800/678-8786.
